Today it’s full moon… and so?
We meet in the parking lot next to the Monument Marie Reine de la Paix – Mary Queen of Peace. Our aim is to be at the top of Signal Hill in less than one hour. Right opposite La Citadelle, Signal Hill situated at the other far end, also forms part of a small range of hills adjacent to the magnificent Port-Louis Range and overlooks the capital city.
A tarred road, closed to the traffic and open to walkers and joggers, nowadays a health track. The rise is not too difficult, but… we’ve got to climb! Overtaking a few, we allow ourselves to think that we’re not too unfit! The view is superb. Right at our feet, the harbour, the Place d’Armes, The Champ de Mars and the northern islands… The last few metres are hard but the reward is beyond words! The panorama is superb and the cherry on top is the whole west coast right to le Morne.
From the top of Signal Hill, in old days, the authorities used to control the arrival and departure of the vessels stopping in Port-Louis.
Six o’clock! The moment is magic. As the sun is ready to disappear in the Indian Ocean, on the opposite side, the moon is rising above the mountains, full, huge and round. We allow ourselves a few more minutes to enjoy the peace, to witness the greeting between sun and moon, the elegance with which the brighter star slowly disappears allowing the night star to show its brightness. We start our climb down to more human preoccupations! Much easier than going up, we chat, enjoy the sight of the town lighting up as dusk plays extra time… another luminosity, another scenery… the show goes on!
