[We Love Maurice #3] The Mauritian South West, a nature lover’s paradise

Monday November 15, 2021

Ah, the Mauritian Southwest! This dream playground for surfers and hikers is the grandiose setting of We Love Maurice #3, a video shot on the rising heights of Henrietta, a few steps away from the 7 Cascades waterfall.

Feel like going for a hike? We Love Maurice #3 will make you want to go into the unknown in this impressive natural environment. From Tamarin to Le Morne, this region is famous for its surfing and is home to the Black River Gorges National Park, the island’s main green lung. It is a paradise for trekking and canyoning enthusiasts. Perched on the western edge of the island’s highest plateau (the Plains of Wilhems), Mauritian electronic music producer Rain faces a unique panorama. He is in Henrietta, the starting point to the famous 7 Cascades waterfall, beautifully filmed by drone at the beginning of the video:

On Rain’s left, the 7 Cascades flow into the Tamarin River below. The waterfalls are one of the most spectacular natural sites of Mauritius. It’s located at the northern end of the Black River Gorges National Park, a trekking paradise with its 70 km of trails.

This is one of the 27 captions (in French and English) in this third We Love Maurice video. The idea behind the We Love Maurice concept is to learn about the island’s natural heritage and to encourage exploration:

2 minutes 52 seconds
The 7 Cascades (or Tamarind Falls) is part of the largest indigenous forest on the island where more than 309 species of plants and 9 species of endemic birds reside. Reaching a height of 250 metres, you can get to the 7 Cascades by hiking or canyoning.

In the video, among impressive aerial views, we discover a gigantic photovoltaic farm. It’s a sign of the ecological transition undertaken in Mauritius in recent years.

8 minutes 35 seconds
The new solar farm in Henrietta has 53,700 photovoltaic panels. This 100% green energy could cover the electricity demand of 12,115 Mauritian households.

Rain, a local resident, seems to be alone in the world as he watches the sunset over Tamarin, the most famous village on the west coast with its salt flats and surf spot. It was the artist who suggested this place to those behind the cameras of La Isla TV:

12 minutes 10 seconds
Rain said: “From here, the view is breathtaking and I am in symbiosis with nature. I chose this site because it’s my favourite place on the island to watch the sunset from the west coast.”

If you like electronic music, follow the artist Rain. A fan of progressive house music, he is one of the most recognised DJs on the island and one of the few to produce his own tracks, sometimes covered by prestigious foreign labels. His set for We Love Maurice, particularly suited to the tranquillity of the venue, is magnificent:

19 minutes 43 seconds
“For We Love Maurice, I prepared a very organic, atmospheric and melodic set, with sounds in tune with the surrounding nature and the horizon,” said Rain.

After 1 hour and 4 minutes of travelling between the mountains, the 7 Cascades and the west coast, the trip ends in darkness. The night has fallen. Tomorrow, put on your walking shoes, you are going to explore. Destination: the Black River Gorges!
